Kathy Lang

Kathy studied dance at the University of Calgary and Grant McEwan University, and is trained in Limón, Graham and Horton technique, as well as Royal Academy and ISTD ballet. Kathy has trained in choreographic studies, Laban, and human anatomy.

Katie Wertz

Katie studied in the Undergraduate Dance Program at Arts Umbrella in so called Vancouver, BC (2012-2013) training in classical ballet, Limon modern dance, Contact Improvisation and various contemporary dance modalities. Searching for intimate and experiential opportunities, Katie brought her professional pursuits back to her home community of Smithers, Northern BC on unceded Wet’suwet’en Territory. There, she continued her journey through rigorous self-training and received mentorship from Miriam Colvin (Myriad Dance Projects, Smithers, BC), Julie Lebel (Foolish Operations, Vancouver, BC), All Bodies Dance Society (Vancouver, BC) and Lindsay Delaronde (Victoria, BC). Remoteness challenged her to adapt to site-specific and site-responsive approaches, her choreographic voice now deepening around land-body relationship and storytelling. Using interdisciplinary tools including textiles, visual arts and photography, Katie’s Colombian roots influence her solo work through colorful movement and performance space design.

Since 2019, Katie has been deeply engaged with community dance, often working at the intersection of performance and community engagement in a unique, remote context. She has led several engagements for participants across ages, abilities, dance backgrounds and communities including ballet, outdoor improvisation, and contemporary fusion with salsa &; cumbia. Wearing many hats as an artist, facilitator, administrator, curator and collaborator with local and regional artists and organizations has provided Katie with versatile skillsets in the field.

Katie is a mother to two children (8 and 10), who greatly inspire and motivate her to continue finding new pathways and connections with dance overtime. She is also a student of Psychology at Camosun College.
